14th Annual Excellence in Masonry Architectural Awards


T
he 14th Annual Excellence In Masonry Architectural Awards program honored its award winning buildings during a special awards banquet held Friday, October 28, 2005, at the Scottsdale Resort and Conference Center. The program honored 13 projects for outstanding masonry design, workmanship and creativity with the use of brick, block, or stone.

The awarded projects are selected by an out of state panel of jurors. This year’s panel was from New Mexico. Terrance Brown, FAIA, with ASCG, Inc., was the Jury Chairman and participated in the awards presentation on Friday night. An award is presented to the architectural firm, the structural engineering firm, general conractor, masonry supplier and masonry contractor for each winning project.

This year’s Gold Trowel winner (the top honor) was The Kiva Club.

The architectural firm for this project was H & S International LLC in Scottsdale. The structural engineering firm was also H & S International LLC. The general contractor was Wespac Construction, Inc. in Phoenix. The masonry supplier was Apache Stone in Phoenix and Superlite Block, an Oldcastle® Company, Phoenix. The masonry contractor was Palo Cristi Custom Stone, Scottsdale and Hochstetler Masonry, Inc., Peoria.

The Annual Excellence In Masonry Architectural Awards program is sponsored by the Arizona Masonry Guild, Inc. Established in 1958, the non-profit organization is celebrating 47 years of service to both the masonry industry and Arizonans.

The Guild has played a significant role in economic development, new product and construction standards, enhanced safety policies and increased energy efficiency of masonry products. It has also been on the forefront of developing and implementing statewide consumer education campaigns and scholarship programs with Northern Arizona University, Arizona State University and the University of Arizona.
